One is the Loneliest Number.
Working with others- the ability be in a group of people and work together towards a common goal, such as completing an assignment.
Criteria:
· Understand that everybody approaches a problem differently
· Communicating effectively with team members
· Understand when to be serious and be productive
· Realize that the group is equally as important as your priorities
This past semester I was involved with a group project in my Architecture course. At the beginning of the semester I did not know how well this group would work together, but to my surprise this team was probably my favorite group of people to work with. They taught me how to work with others in a more efficient way then I had ever before.
Our grade in the course was based on the group assignments rather than tests, so it was important that our group worked together. When we found out who was going to be in our course, we met up after class to introduce each other. We all had similar majors, but all our personalities varied and it showed by the way we approached the projects. For example, when brainstorming the silly ideas would come from the bubbly, fun people in the group and the practical ideas came from those who wanted to get the project done. The one common thing that the group had was that we wanted to get a good grade, but also be creative with our ideas. For example, for one of our innovation ideas we came up with an idea of having glasses that would set you in a hologram setting and allow you to learn about another culture and their native language. The idea was far-fetched, however we loved the idea because it was unique and it would be very useful if the idea actually was created. I would say that the drive for the group to be creative was one of our strengths, along with the ability to communicate. At the beginning of the semester the group tried to meet up on certain days to talk about the project. However, with all the time conflicts we were not able to meet up or get anything done. So instead one person in our group added us to a Group Message on our phones so that we would able to communicate faster and delegate tasks in a more efficient way. Most of communication came through those group messages and we would also share our documents over an online file share. As a side note, I do not think we would have been as efficient in communication if it was not for technology. Being creative and having strong communication skills really did help our group be more proficient.
Along with having strengths, our group also had its weaknesses. The ability to take things seriously and getting caught up in other with other courses was the group’s downfall. There were times in the group were I think we lost focus of what our goal was and the due date that was coming up. Also, the group be stressful at points because some did not take the projects as seriously as we needed to be. Another weakness that we had was that others would put their courses ahead of a group assignment. I was guilty of that sometimes. I would be so worried about making a grade in a class “that really mattered” that I was losing focus on the group project or the purpose of the class. Luckily though we all kept each other in check so nothing really ever went downhill for our group projects.
Overall I enjoyed my experience working with this group. They were all so unique, kind, and understanding. This past semester I was in the hospital due to a kidney infection, and my group was very understanding and would send me the class notes and check up on me on how I was doing. I really am happy that I was put into this group of students. What I took away from working with others was that a group will have their strengths but they will also have their weaknesses too. It is up to your group to communicate and work through the issues and any obstacle that comes your way. For example, working with each of our schedules and busy lives. This group made me realize that when we all work together though something great will come out of it, such as an A in the course.
