Under Pressure.
Management- being able to organize yourself or a group in order to create and achieve goals. By having thought out plans and flexibility, you are able to control progress and achieve the ending goal.
Criteria:
• Need to be organized
• Have goal and the motivation to get them done
• Be flexible
• Must establish communication to convey my intended message
This semester I hosted a lunch bible study every Friday at the Wesley Foundation. The topic covered was 13 letters of Paul and the subject is presented through rap songs. The lunch study is a responsibility that takes management skills every week in order for it to go smoothly. I look at the curriculum that the book has for the week. The guide has two hours’ worth of material, however I only have 30 minutes per bible study, so I have to decide what sections to cover. All the attendees get the lyrics to follow along with the song. During the bible study I have to keep the conversation going but also stay on track to what the guide is trying to gear us towards. My main goal of the bible study is for the attendees to get the overall grasp of the chapter’s theme. I also want the people who go to the bible study to learn more about the hip hop culture and how it can complement Christianity.
The bible study has taught me the skills it takes to manage. I always had great management skills when it came to myself and schoolwork, however I have never had to manage people. I would not have been able to have a successful study if I was not organized. I needed to always stick to the routine of making sure everything from printing out the lyrics to reading the lesson beforehand was done in order for the study to run efficiently. What I have taken away from the lunch bible study is that you have to adapt to problems that can arise. For example, there are times I can see that lunch bible study partakers are not connecting with the song. At that point I usually just move on to the message behind the lyrics and the point it is trying to serve. Another problem that arises is when some of the attendees over talk one another. I learned that I have to be vocal and speak defiantly. This was hard for me because I did not want to come off as if I was yelling. Though I learned if you speak with a purpose it does not come off as harsh. My main weakness with management is delegating work to others. I have a fear that nothing will get done unless I do it. By doing that though, I am not using my time efficiently by juggling too many tasks. I end up running out of time, stressing myself out, or not getting the task done when I do not ask help from others. I have improved since my freshman year, but I have a lot of room to grow when it comes to managing project, people, and time more efficiently.
By improving my management skills this semester, I was able to bring a group of people together to discuss being a Christian in modern day culture. I am extremely privileged to have had this opportunity. I was able to grow as a Christian while improving my management and even communication skills.
